Grand Army of the Republic
At the rear entrance to this historic restaurant is a plaque recognizing the accomplishment to one of the commanders of the Grand Army of the Republic. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army who served in the American Civil War for the Northern/Federal forces. Founded in 1866 it grew to include hundreds of posts across the nation. It dissolved in 1956 at the death of its last member. It became among the first advocacy groups supporting voting rights for black veterans, promoting education, and helping to make Memorial Day a national holiday. It also assisted in lobbying the United States Congress to establish regular veterans' pensions. At it's peak membership it had more than 490,000 members. It was succeeded by the Sons of the Civil War Veterans.
